Another step towards strengthening cooperation: Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Turkmenistan and Iran

In the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, met on March 28 with an Iranian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who arrived on a working visit to Ashgabat.

A wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation in the political, diplomatic, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres were discussed at the meeting. The parties noted the importance of summit and high-level meetings in expanding bilateral friendly relations.

During the negotiations, the importance of the activities of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation of the joint Turkmen-Iranian group was emphasized. The agenda also included issues of developing cooperation in the fuel and energy sector and increasing transport and transit potential.

During the meeting, Amir Abdollahian added: “The issue of water resource management is also relevant in our region, and it is extremely important for the two countries to continue cooperation in this direction.”

The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry called the Caspian Sea an area for constructive cooperation between the coastal countries. He emphasized the importance of communication between the two countries in accordance with the mutual interests of both sides. He also considers it necessary to continue discussions on legal issues of security and economics of the Caspian Sea. In addition, he expressed Iran's readiness to host the third economic conference of the Caspian countries at the level of prime ministers.

Meredov, in turn, mentioned positive bilateral relations and regarded the meetings of senior officials of the two countries, including Presidents and Foreign Ministers, as a sign of strong ties and bonds of friendship between the two countries. He also called the Caspian Sea a sea of peace, mutual understanding and cooperation.

The foreign ministers of the two countries emphasized the importance of expanding economic cooperation in the Caspian Sea and increasing the volume of bilateral exchanges. They also raised the serious issue of environmental risks to the Caspian Sea, saying that it must be taken into account.
