The Sambo Founders' Cup is named in honor of Anatoly Kharlampiev, Vasily Oshchepkov and Viktor Spiridonov, who are considered the founders of this sport.
The tournament was established in 1980 on the initiative of the Department of Physical Education of the Moscow Energy Institute, where one of the founders of sambo, Anatoly Arkadyevich Kharlampiev, worked in recent years.
